Time to get serious about being oil-free New Zealand

*Overcoming oil addiction essential to easing interest rate pressures*

CHEAPER oil has given New Zealand a temporary interest rate reprieve but we
need to invest in alternatives to our oil addiction if we want to
futureproof our economy against future oil price rises and hence interest
rates rises, says the Green Party.

"The decision by the Reserve Bank to hold interest rates steady is largely
attributable to the drop in oil prices over the last few months, but they
will not stay low in the long term," says Russel Norman, Green Co-Leader.

"Our addiction to imported oil results a permanent inflationary risk to the
New Zealand economy, and a permanent risk to blowing out our record trade
deficit and current account deficit," according to Dr.Norman, also the
Greens' Economics Spokesperson.

"In the long term oil prices can only increase and hence we need to make
investments now to reduce our oil dependence in the future.

"Our woeful public transport leaves people dependent on oil-driven private
cars. We need to invest massively and rapidly in decent, affordable,
reliable, clean, regular public transport so that people have a real
alternative to taking the car.

"Electrifying and extending the Auckland rail system is a particularly
urgent public transport infrastructure investment.

"We also need investments in alternatives to road freight such as rail
freight and coastal shipping.

"Sweden has committed to going oil free by 2020 so why can't we?

"To put downward pressure on interest rates, greenhouse emissions, the trade
deficit, and the current account deficit we should be breaking our oil
addiction as fast as possible."

Great! Just when I get back my stick-shift, I have to give it up with an oil-free society. ;-)

Seriously, it will be interesting to see if people are really willing to give up the convenience of the auto (at least perceived convenience) for public transportation. In the US, the polls show the same result: everyone in favor of public transportation so that EVERYONE ELSE will take the train or bus and leave them open roads...

The idea of New Zealand becoming a non oil-dependent country is certainly an appealing one. New Zealand could take example from the moves which Sweden is taking in this progressive direction. According to a speech by Sweden’s Minister for Sustainable Development, the country is taking several interesting steps towards an oil-independent state. The government is favoring consumers who purchase environmentally friendly vehicles by making CO2 fuels cheaper and delaying a tax on such fuels. It is also granting parking, charging, and tax privileges to owners of friendly fuel cars. Last but not least, the Swedish scientific community is being encouraged to develop more pro-environment technology.
If New Zealand does step up its effort to reduce the amount of oil being used and successfully uses alternate sources of energy, other countries will be inspired to join in and reduce their own oil consumption rates. If New Zealand makes an effort to stop the fast depletion of oil they will also begin to cut their gas emissions and follow through on the Kyoto Protocol. Once countries such as Australia and the United States, who haven’t signed the Protocol on a national level, see the economic and ecological victory in a fully developed country, they may become more inclined to become apart of the endeavor to save the planet.
